Also, I want to say that this is an excellent submarine website. You definitely deserve an award for creating an elaborate and interesting site.

Comments: Richard B. Mendelson alerted me to the site. He and I are Chaplain's for our respective Submarine Veterans Bases and life long friends. The persistence of the INS search effort is in keeping with the tradition of honoring those who have gone before us and paid for our freedoms. I'm proud to be included in this brotherhood of submariners and to have been included in this remembrance of these heros. I will pray for a calm resolution to the issue of salvage and burial. The time honored tradition for men of the sea is to remain with the vessel (if the vessel remains at sea). However, if the vessel is salvaged, a suitable and honored interment should be attempted if there are any remains found. From a mariners perspective, I hope that God has been merciful to return the "dust" to the dust and allow those souls to rest with Him, undisturbed by our emotions and well wishes. + Aye, Bob Patrick

Comments: Found this site on Ron Martini's Submarine BBS. In 66' we nested with 3 British "T" class at HMS Dolphin. Got to tour one. If memory serves me, the T-class boat surfaced to manually raise the snorkel from its horizontal position in the deck. The boat would then dive again. This site holds meaning to all boat sailors of any nation. Will pass it on to all I meet.

I have been keeping track of the DAKAR legacy for some time now. I hope that finding her will finally ease the burden that has been with the families of the gallant seamen that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country & faith. Being & Ex-submariner and having been on many tours, I know that it is not always the best of times. But I would not give anything for the time I served. God bless all of you AMEN!!

There is a memorial website for the Scorpion (SSN 589) the webaddress is: www.txoilgas.com/589.html May they rest in peace.

Comments: I remember the DAKAR being lost in 1968. I was in the UK and had completed my Submarine training. On the 14th December 1967, I had just finished the decommissioning cruise as an Able Seaman on the submarine HMS Thermopylae. We had done a quick trip to Amsterdam. I seem to recollect, though vaguely, as it is over 31 years ago, that the "new" boats for Israel were at HMS Dolphin at that time. I left for my new posting in Scotland to join the new Australian submarine HMAS Otway not long after. The news, in January 1968 about the loss of the Dakar, was devastating to all of us young submariners as we were to do a similar trip by sailing the Otway to Australia later that year. The remote chance of a collision with a surface ship is always in the back of your mind when at sea in a submarine. In 1972 I was in the Far East on another Australian submarine, HMAS Onslow. During a night exercise we were involved in a collision with a surface ship, HMS Leopard, while at periscope depth. Our Attack periscope was bent as a result of the incident. I was in the control room, on the helm and can still remember most of what went on during that minute or so of time. It could have been much worse so I thank my lucky stars for being alive today. The Dakar probably had a similar experience but with a much bigger ship. There is a very fine line between winning and loosing in that situation. My thoughts go out to the families and friends of the lost Dakar sailors, as they did before, almost 32 years ago. Kind Regards, Larry Reedman.

Naturally, we were very sad to hear of the loss of the submarine Dakar en route to Haifa and extend sympathies to the families of all concerned. Indeed, I am told that that was a sad year for Submarines with the loss of three others including one French one within weeks of Dakar.

I was a guest for dinner on the Dakar the last night she was in Faslane. There are few things that make sence when fellow submariners are lost especialy when you know a lot of them. What hurts the most is you have no where to put a headstone or lay flowers, but you must alway,s believe that you will one day be together again where no one can every hurt you.

Being a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, I can sympathize with the trials of coping with a small national military budget. But, we make do with what we have. Comments: I was Sonar Technician Second Class aboard the USS Darter (SS-576) in January 1968. We were in the closing days of our "Med. Cruise" and ready to go home to Charleston, South Carolina and our next to the last port was Gibraltar. While there, I met a couple of sailors off the "Dakar" and shared a few drinks and "sea stories" with them. I don't remember their names after almost 32 years, but that doesn't decrease the feeling of kinship with all submarine sailors and the sorrow at their loss in particular. 1968 was a bad year for submarines and I felt too uncomfortable about the fact that along with sharing a port with the "Dakar", we were also in port in Toulon, France with the French submarine "Minerve" which was also lost in the Mediterranean while we were there. It was nice to find this tribute to the "Dakar", and be able to add these comments. May they rest in peace!

Comments: Hi, My name is Yossi and I served at the Israeli Navy between the years 1982 -1987, during these years I served on the I.N.S Eilat and as a trainer - teacher in the Navy training base. Since then and until today I'm teaching at the Submarine school. This is an excellent Web site, very well put together and well written. Even for me, who (think that) knows the history of the Israeli navy & submarine, it was very interesting. The memory of the 69 sailors of the Dakar will always be with us and this site is an excellent memorial monument for them. You've done an excellent work and I hope you will keep on updating the site.

Very interesting although identifying has driven me "semi" crazy. I served in the Navy -76. Finland has no Submarines, shame. Maybe in future ? A couple one would not do any harm...? In case absolutely necessary... Very Best Regards from Finland, Markku

Although my company and I have been involved with the DAKAR loss for a number of years, it was not until this search mission that I was truly aware of how emotionally charged was the issue of her loss after so many years. We are honored to have played a role in solving the mystery, and perhaps helping the families of the 69 reach some closure in their grief.

At the proper moment I said a prayor for those brave young men who are on eternal patrol. I feel as though I have lost my own shipmates in this disaster. My grandmother has been waiting for this news for a long time, no matter how painful it may be for her. She lives in Israel. I wish I could be there with her now at this special time. She is now 79 years old. She must be experiencing a lot of different emotions. I commend the Israeli government for being so determined to find the Dakar. It shows how this nation never forgets the people who help keep Israel the strong nation that it is. Everyone plays an important role, no matter how small or large their contribution.

Comments: I found you following an article in a Turkish newspaper "Hurriyet". I think 'DAKAR' should be salvaged.Becuase, the families of the honorable soldiers can find their belongings or left messages. I hope, on that day, another ceremony will be arranged for those soldiers who died for their country.

Comments: This is an excellent Website, and as an ex-Israeli army officer I salute you, Uri, for the supperb job you have done in creating this memorial site to our soldiers/mariners. You have done so, such a long time before the finding of the Dakkar, and now after 31 years under the sea it shows how important it is to remember and to tell the world. I hope the story of the sinking will come to some conclusion soon, although I think the Sub should remain in place as a maritime grave, which the Israeli sailors arrived to so many years ago, their last resting place. Keep on the good and timely job of updating this site as information is gathered and found.

I hope the families will find some peace now. I admire the hard work you have put together and put this site. Thanks for that as the memory of those great soldiers should remain with us forever.

Comments: I was in the Canadian navy serving in British submarines in England when the Isreali government purchased the S-boats. During 1959-60 I was a crewmember aboard HMS Alliance and both Alliance and Truncheon were in refit at Devonport. At the same time the Isreali S-boats were undergoing their acceptance trials. Some of our crew were employed as instructors for the Isreali crews as many of us had served in S-boats. It was an interesting time. Small world, isn't it? Like your website, I've got it bookmarked.

Comments: Hello to the wearer of Submariners' badge #507, Most impressed that the Israeli Navy numbers their submarine badges. Makes them very personal. I am a retired submariner from the Canadian Navy. I was in Portsmouth Dockyard aboard HMS/m Aeneas when Totem(T) and Turpin were being converted to Dakar and Leviathan. I met many of Dakar's crew but cannot recall any names (God Rest Their Souls). We all noted the new lines of the conversions which were very impressive. I recall that a "divers' lock-out" was being incorporated into Dakar as part of the conversion. Was that to happen in Leviathan and Dolphin and was it utilized in the former gun tower? A very informative and interesting site. Note: I'm sure that the 'Before' and 'After' photos presented in the "T" Class section, are in fact British "A" class boats. (and) I was impressed with your inclusion of the Cowichan tribe totem pole and the accompanying storyline. That makes 'theory D' about Dakar's disappearance kind of scarey.
